USING ‘RATIONALISM’ TO MANAGE STRESS

The purpose of this article is to show the link between ‘Negative Emotions’ and ‘Stress’. There is a particular emphasis on ‘Fear’, ‘Anxiety’, and ‘Jealousy’ the most common ‘Negative Emotions’ in our Society. The problem is that probably we have become too ‘Irrational’ and we have set our goals too high, when we fail to achieve them, we are bound to feel ‘Stressed”. So after all “What is Stress

"The Encyclopedia of Stress" defines Stress as a "real or interpreted threat to the physiological or psychological integrity of an individual that results in physiological and/or behavioral responses". In other words Stress is any change in your World that evokes some reaction from you.

Broadly we can divide Stress into two parts:

  • The Positive Stress and
  • The Negative Stress.

THE POSITIVE STRESS: Quite a few people tend to confuse ‘Tiredness’ with ‘Stress’. ‘Physical Stress’ is different from ‘Mental Stress’. If you work for long hours you are bound to get physically tired. This is an example of positive Stress and it’s largely un-harmful. You can overcome it by rest.

THE NEGATIVE STRESS: This is the Stress that is governed by Social factors and is more harmful.

We can sub-divide it into two parts

  • Fear that leads to anxiety.
  • Jealousy that leads to intriguing behavior.

a) FEAR THAT LEADS TO ANXIETY:

You must be wondering. What’s ‘fear’? Well it is the ‘fear of the Society’.

See we all assume (although there is no such parameter) that we belong to a certain status in the Society (examples like the Rich, the Upper middle class, the Middle class etc.) and we want to maintain it tenaciously, just imagine an upward movement in our "so-called" Social status is acceptable to us but not vice-versa (although it’s just an assumption). However much we may try but the Human Brain is such that you cannot stop it from ‘thinking’ we are always surrounded by ‘worries’ mostly ‘Negative’ in nature.

So what is the way out?

Its simple ‘RATIONALISM’ first and foremost stop living in a make-belief world.

The most unique feature of us INDIANS is our “UNSHAKABLE FAITH IN GOD” my humble suggestion to you is to try and see ‘suffering'. Take your vehicle out in the night to go to a Rain Basera (Night Shelter) see the people sleeping on the foot-paths (the destitute) or go to a Hospital and see suffering first-hand and then try and compare yourself with those unfortunates and try and judge that how “better and lucky” you are?

Come back home sit in front of GOD and say a PROFUSE ‘THANK YOU’ TO GOD. I assure you it helps a lot.

b) JEALOUSY THAT LEADS TO INTRIGUING BEHAVIOR:

Remember when your colleague got the "raise" you felt jealous?

Your neighbor bought a new home/car and you felt jealous.

Your neighbor’s son/daughter got admission in MBBS and you felt jealous.

There can be so many examples when we feel jealous. It creates negative stress and harms our body. Instead of taking a leaf out of other person’s success and try and imitate it, we start to think intriguingly to ARREST that person’s RISE which is not in our hands and thus unnecessarily waste our time and energies.

But if we think 'RATIONALLY' we can easily overcome these discomforts. My humble suggestion to you is just be a part of others’ ‘joyous moments’ so that when your time to celebrate a moment comes, you find those very people cheering you. Believe me and try it, it works.

Swami Avdeshanand Giri ji `Maharaj` during his discourse "Towards Social Harmony-A Spiritual Prospective overcoming Stress through Spirituality" explained "to understand Spirituality one has to understand the mind which is the seat of everything. Mind is in constant pursuit of external pleasure and eternal security. Whenever there are obstacles on the path of what the mind desires, there is Stress and Despair".

"Contrary emotions like anger and anxiety get access to our minds only when we cease to analyze our own self and seek to change everything around us to suit ourselves rather than striving towards the opposite" .

Swamiji further explains " when one looks inwards (Spirituality means-looking inwards) one realizes that the first and foremost desire of any human being is life itself .......and the source of life is not money, it is life itself".

Researches have shown that people with a "Positive Mental Attitude" have different responses to Stress. A new study has found that the same people are less likely to suffer from Depression, Heart Disease and Diabetes. Andrew Steptoe, Professor of Psychology at University College, London, who led the study said that happy people rely on a different part of the nervous system that slows the Heart-Rate and they recover more quickly from Stress.

Although Spirituality is a good way to get rid of ‘Negative Stress’ and be ‘At Peace with Yourself’ but Stress at the workplace is unavoidable. Fortunately the Human Brain can be trained to ‘Relax’ even when faced with Stressful Situations’

The Package III on this website is a ‘perfect solution’ which can help your body to cope with stress better.

You must have heard : A HEALTHY MIND RESIDES IN A HEALTHY BODY.
